This scenario poses real-world challenges for the robot, e.g., the robot needs to navigate autonomously in a cluttered environment, it needs to classify and grasp objects, and it needs to interact with the children and adapt its behaviors to the children’s group dynamics. Within the EU FP7 project SQUIRREL, we aim to address these challenges and develop a robot for children (4-10 years old) that cannot only perform complex navigation and manipulation tasks in a cluttered environment, but is also affectively and socially intelligent, engaging and fun in a collaborative task. We currently focus on designing appropriate robot interaction styles for a small group of children and evaluating the levels of fun and engagement in child-robot and child-child interactions.

Robot initiative in a team learning task increases the rhythm of interaction but not the perceived engagement
We hypothesize that the initiative of a robot during a collaborative task with a human can influence the pace of interaction, the human response to attention cues, and the perceived engagement. We propose an object learning experiment where the human interacts in a natural way with the humanoid iCub. Through a two-phases scenario, the human teaches the robot about the properties of some objects...

For this purpose, 5 EFL teachers participated in 11 online forum discussion sessions. Before participating in di...
متن کاملYou're Doing It Wrong! Studying Unexpected Behaviors in Child-Robot Interaction
We present a study on the impact of unexpected robot behaviors on the perception of a robot by children and their subsequent engagement in a playful interaction based on a novel ”domino” task. We propose an original analysis methodology which blends behavioral cues and reported phenomenological perceptions into a compound index. While we found only a limited recognition of the different misbeha...
متن کاملAn Architecture for Engagement in Collaborative Conversations between a Robot and Humans
This paper reports on our research on developing the ability for robots to engage with humans in a collaborative conversation. Engagement is the process by which two (or more) participants establish, maintain and end their perceived connection during interactions they jointly undertake. The paper makes two contributions: an architecture for human-robot collaborative conversation with engagement...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Aspects of Engagement during Dialogic Storytelling Child–Robot Interaction
The success of robotic agents in close proximity of humans depends on their capacity to engage in social interactions and maintain these interactions over periods of time that are suitable for learning. A critical requirement is the ability to modify the behavior of the robot contingently to the attentional and social cues signaled by the human. A benchmark challenge for an engaging social robo...
